I agree with your last statement, but I think the root of arrogance is the

selfishness and lack of awareness that I mentioned. Arrogance is exactly why people reflexively say we are the greatest country on earth without thinking about it or seeing others.

Funny thing about Malaysia, the people I liked the least there were an older Englishman that seemed to be playing the part of a Lord overseeing a rubber plantation 100 years ago and a Canadian that was as ugly to non whites as anything I have personally witnessed in the US. The Chinese and Malays that I interacted with were incredibly nice to each other... not just polite but warm, as well as to me and the people I went with. We were there for about a month so we saw quite a bit.
