I wouldn't judge US innovation on the stock market value of Tesla either,
but Tesla is certainly the world leader in electric cars which Maupin specifically called out as a weak point for the US.
I'm not sure our lead shrinking vis-a-vis china is a reflection of lack of innovation on the part of the US, there is just now competition from from another major economy (that happens to steal more than innovate).
Here's an innovation ranking that has us at #3 (up from #6 previously). China doesn't crack the top 10. we trail Sweden and Switzerland which are no doubt more innovative than the US given their relative size. Sweden is not much larger than the Bay Area which if it were its own country would no doubt be #1 by a large margin.
There are a lot of things to criticize about the US relative to the rest of the world. Innovation seems to be a very odd choice to go after. That's one area where we continually excel.
