So first of all, best of luck to you and your family. But I think you're

using the 99% as a binary cutoff. Here are the deaths by age from covid vs. the 2018-2019 flu season which was about perfectly average with 34K overall deaths. The age brackets don't line up perfectly but they're close enough

…........................Covid......Flu........Covid/flu
0-24 / 0-18….......620........477........1.30x
24-44 / 18-49.....7938.......2450.......3.24x
45-64 / 50-64….54388......5676.......9.58x
65+....................266647....25555.....10.43x
All......................329593...34158.......9.65x

The 20ish to 45-50 age group is 3.2x more deadly for covid than flu. The next two age groups are 10x more deadly. You'll also note the total deaths only add to 329K as there is a lag with CDC reporting. All of those #'s will likely be double by the time we hit the 1 year mark was there's almost no way we don't hit 600K deaths. With a death rate for young people that is 6x that of the flu and 20x as deadly as the flu for age 50+, I don't know how you could really think it's just like the flu for most people who get it. There are a lot of people getting really sick that aren't dying.

99.99% of people who fly on a plane don't die in a plane crash. If suddenly planes started dropping out of the sky at 20x the rate as normal, it would still be 99.8% of people who get on a plane and don't tie, but I don't think anyone would feel good about 20x the number of plane crashes and say "for most people it's just like flying was before"
