I think they like to pretend they don’t, but deep down really do understand
It’s my opinion, but look no further than the obsessions with “cancel culture” and “wokeness” and “religious bigotry” and the like. The Trump supporting white right is constantly conditioned with a diet of all the horrible things “the left” is going to do to “cancel” them, including telling them their religious views (which many if not most of them think are far more important than the secular laws that govern the nation) marginalized and disrespected too. Again, look at the 50 year politicization of Roe v Wade, the advancement of gay rights, etc.
Obviously there is more than one brand of deplorable in the basket, but I think we dismiss the average, run of the mill Trumper as a “good dad and father and member of his community who is just so damned dumb he’s being fooled into thinking the election was stolen” at our own peril. They aren’t as stupid as we like to think they are, and people who are good to their families and neighbors can very easily support an authoritarian dictator and view everyone outside their community as the enemy, and I think that is what Trumpism is doing to their support base.
