My philosophy is that the left has to be perfect every day

And I mean that seriously. You might not see me call it out on here, but it drives me crazy when I see idiots chasing Sinema into a bathroom. I also don't chase the squirrel of every little stupid thing done on the right. The MLK bust things was idiotic, though they did issue a retraction later. Maxine Waters is a moron, no argument there. They all wind up on Fox News as fodder for the right, just like MTG and company feed MSNBC garbage to yell about. That's why I want perfection: glass houses and all that. Ultimately though, those are small potatoes and idiocy and overreactions are a free-for-all on both sides.

The Democrats aren't perfect, even though they really have to be to convince the public that these things matter. It drives me crazy that Biden hasn't just come out and disowned Hunter and said "my son is a world-class f*** up and I won't be speaking with him for my entire time in office". But if you actually compare Biden's actions to Trump's, they are fundamentally different. There's no evidence that Hunter's idiocy has ever affected US policy, but there's plenty to indicate that Trump's corruption has.

As far as impeachment and Russian collusion, I'll caveat that I told people as soon as Trump was elected that he was GOING TO do something impeachment worthy in the first few months of his term. Talk of impeachment from day one was silly, but I knew it was going to happen and be deserved because I understood what Trump was by March 2016. I view impeachment quite simply: if you commit a crime while President, you should be impeached because there is no other way for you to face justice in our system. Clinton should have been impeached and removed for lying under oath and obstructing justice (it was a sad irony to me that Hillary Clinton was the first Democrat I had to support for President). Nixon would have and should have been removed from office. Frankly, I don't know the history on Andrew Johnson enough to judge. But Trump committed obstruction in a lot of different ways, incited a riot, did everything with Ukrained, etc. I know you disagree, but from a history perspective those are as deserving of impeachment as anything that a President has ever done. I would argue they are worse than any other case in history. That's reflected in how many Republicans voted to remove him in the second impeachment and Romney voting in the first impeachment.

I don't think that the Democrats did a great job of arguing just how abnormal Trump's presidency was, in large part because they got bogged down on kids in cages and emotional things, rather than the facts of the case. If you want to argue that contributes to division, fine. I'll grant you that. I didn't agree with Trump's immigration policies in general, but I made it a point to not argue about every little policy issue for 4 years because I thought it was important to see the forest from the trees. Most of Trump's policies were the same policies a President Pence would have had. It was the lying, the rule breaking, the law breaking, and the corruption that I was focused on the whole time. And those things were unique to Trump, despite what you might believe. It was Trump's lying about the election that got us January 6 and a massive escalation on the division front, which is what French's article was really talking about.
