Just makes the chart visually easier to see the 2020 AND the 2021 effect


because if you do a y/y compare, 2021 is DOWN from 2020 but deaths are still way up from normal trend. But here's the chart updated with Y/Y compares.

I would say absent a pandemic, it would be "normal" for deaths to increase by ~50K per year just due to population growth and an aging population (and even 50K is on the high side). So that "normal" trend would have had 2020 at 2.9 million deaths and 2021 at 2.95 million. Instead we had 3.44M and 3.25M or 840k excess deaths. And 2021 is not done. There's a lag in the reporting so when final 2021 death counts are in, it will be closer to 900K excess deaths than 800K excess deaths.

I'd love to see a longer trend too. Haven't really tried to look for it. It's probably out there
