With Canada's relatively harsher lockdown compared to the US, I could

maybe buy this. A harsher lockdown would lead to fewer direct covid deaths and more deaths as a result of delayed treatment due to lockdowns. Our covid deaths per capita are more than 3x higher than theirs. And while treatments were certainly delayed in the initial outset of the pandemic in the US, we allowed for necessary treatments to continue once we got past April/May. I had a routine colonoscopy and 2 annual checkups during the pandemic. My wife's initial cancer surgery took place in late March of 2020 (it did require hospital committee approval to deem it "emergency"), she had radiation treatment in May, and then scans every 3 months until August when she started chemo and then has had scans every 6 weeks since. None of that has been disrupted with covid, although I cannot accompany her to her chemo treatments.

One final note... while the 70% increase in opioid deaths makes for a good headline, it's 7 deaths per day. Certainly not explaining the majority of the 30K+ increased deaths in Canada since covid began.
