For starters, If you or I could not vote, we would have no say in electing

those to represent us. That is no small thing. It is one of the basic defining American traits. Selecting representatives who (arguably) can determine important matters regarding our lives is as fundamental as it gets. If our concerns/needs aren't being addressed, sooner or later we suffer the consequences. Any number of laws passed in our history are perfect examples of how the vote can be consequential to our lives. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the more recent Healthcare Act come to mind.

The notion of living in a country on a permanent basis with no say whatsoever regarding the conditions of your existence would not sit well with either of us. If your main beef about this is the original crime, the simple answer (as with nearly all crimes) is paying the penalty. That would be a fine and earning your citizenship over a period of time. Anything less would suggest that the motivation behind this is not the crime but something else.
