think the GOP is doing a better job of that right now. Abortion, maybe, is still a litmus test for candidates but not for party membership. Heterosexuality clearly isn't, for membership that is. There is room for economic populists AND globalists. You can't profess a belief in "big government," though you can put food on your family (to quote W) exclusively via contracting with the Feds.

So why can't the Dems accept white working class people who don't want to compete with legal or illegal immigrants, for the rapidly declining number of jobs for which they are qualified?

We've had anti-abortion Dems, we've had Confederate flag displaying Dems, we've had gun-loving Dems, we've had anti-gay marriage Dems including the last two Democratic presidents, at least at some point in their careers. It wasn't always the platform, but dissent on these issues was tolerated. We need to get back to that, at least on the issue of border security, IMO.
