To your point about me only caring about red-states, I hope the Supreme Court overturns Maryland's Democratic favored districts (see link).

Your second point is pretty non-responsive too. I think you are making a race-based point here, but Republican voters in Alabama are pretty monolithic as well. That is what allows the gerrymandering to work so well. But the Democrats are packed in one district, while the Republicans are spread out. That is why you get 6/7 districts.

I care about this issue because a lot of democratic political theory assumes as a basis that there is competition. It is a lot like the free market. Competition makes politicians responsive to voters, and competition makes better governance. Political gerrymandering breaks this competition. It creates a market failure.
