On the Hurricane point, I did sort of think about that comparison,
but a fire is just so much more terrifying and a "direct hit" so much less survivable. As long as you're not in the storm surge zone, you're reasonably safe in a well built structure during a hurricane. Yes, if you take a direct hit from category 4 or 5 storm, all bets are off even in a well built home, but you DO have more warning and time to evacuate, and even if you don't evacuate, you still have a decent chance at surviving a hurricane.
