Not really, except in the sense that the government owns the company that


produces the biggest source of revenue. However, in fact the bulk of businesses in Venezuela, like in most countries, are privately owned. Venezuela's problems have to do with a lot more than the drop in oil revenues. Poor management of money markets, lack of economic diversification, government spending programs, and particularly the dilution of courts, the legislative branch and the rule of law are all why they are in a bind.

But it makes a better soundbite to just say it is socialism, whatever the critics take "socialism" to mean.
