I of course feel there was a pretty clear quid and a pretty clear pro quo

But were this a criminal prosecution it seems likely that our Supreme Court would find a way to reverse any conviction, and in the impeachment context every Republican Senator will hang his or her hat on precisely your argument to justify a vote to acquit. And probably (possibly? maybe?) avoid electoral backlash. In most states, that is. It will probably hurt Collins and Gardner but they’re dead senators walking anyway.

I mean, we know what’s going to happen, the only question (in my feeble mind, anyway) is how does it impact the election.
