I can only think of one reason why Trump would delay nominating someone.

And that's to help his re-election chances.

His message to the Democrat voters if he holds off - "I followed the precedent that Mitch set before the last election." And then he hopes that it lowers the enthusiasm and turnout of the democrat voters.

His message to the Republicans would be extortion. "Hey, look, if you want me to be the one nominating the next Supreme Court Justice, well then, you have to make sure that I get re-elected, right?" and that might sway some Republicans who were leaning away from him, or maybe energize those who had decided not to vote.

But note that I don't think that this situation is likely to happen. He'll nominate someone, and Benito the Turtle will quickly bring it to a floor vote. The only hope then becomes if a few Republican senators, who see their re-election chances in flames (ie, they know that kowtowing to Donald won't help them anymore), decide to defect and vote against a nominee.
