interests at the time. At the time of the adoption of the constitution the self concept was still Virginians, Pennsylvanians, etc., not Americans.

Resultingly, it was believed that small states would suffer as they had in the confederacy at the hands of the larger states.

At its core, the Constitution was designed to benefit large and small states alike, economically. They did not foresee a minority that would take advantage of the blank spots not covered in the Constitution (and some that are) to corrupt the normal exercise of self government.

Today the Electoral College is only an anachronism that can be co-opted by unscrupulous politicians as we are seeing right now.
