Probably would not go to prison for a criminal offense here, but that is
about the extent of his "defense." As you both note, this is a political trial with a much different standard being argued. "High crimes and misdemeanors" is really just a more antiquated way of saying "abuse of power, abuse of office, or dereliction of duty."
I can't think of conduct that better fits that standard than what Trump did -- starting with his blatant attempts to subvert democracy and gaslight the public with all the horseshit about election fraud, capped off with hosting a violent mob and telling them to march to the Capitol Building to intimidate Congress because the election he lost was being certified.
Honestly, in most times in history his fucking head would be on a pike.
