Saw this NYT article on the Va guv race and thought I'd link it.
Basically, about how school curricula is front and center in causing the anger that is giving Youngkin such a strong chance to win the first statewide race for the repubs in 12 years. In addition to anger over mask and vax mandates, there's a lot of motivating rage among conservatives over how race and gender are being taught.
It's very hard for me to gauge this issue, not having kids in school. Anecdotally, I hear a lot of complaints from parents about kids being taught that they are something just because of their skin color. I spoke a lot with a colleague who is very liberal - raised by hippies herself and shares those sensibilities. She says her teen and tween kids now insist that there is no such thing as gender, Gender's a false construct. I don't think she knows exactly how that concept squares with the biological realities of mammals in this new way of teaching gender, and it leaves her scratching her head. She's not the sort to start voting red as a result, but she is not happy about it.
The point of the article is that Virginia might be a telling bellweather of how that issue is going to play nationally in the next couple of elections.
