The colleague I described would like to agree with you on that.
But, there’s no conversation over “there is no such thing as gender”. Her jaw just drops. I asked her if she asked what that means for sports - are men and women sprinting against each other? She says her kids just get angry about anything that challenges their logic. There’s an Orwellian feel to her anecdotes about it.
I just don’t know how widespread this really is, and how much is just GOP propaganda. I do think it will be interesting to watch the results of this race, and if Youngkin wins, the post mortems on what allowed it. Race and gender have been very stubborn, difficult issues. I can appreciate the desire to find new ways to address persistent prejudice and its impacts.
Human nature has a way of countering extremes by going as far over to the other extreme as possible. Something emotionally satisfying about that. But it does tend to cause a whipsaw back in the other direction. I personally believe this is a big part of how we got Trump.
I’ll leave it with this - things like separate graduation ceremonies by race, or instruction that you are automatically a victim or person of privilege just because of your race - this is the new segregationist left. I think people should take a deep breath and try not to counter batshit crazy with different and opposite batshit crazy. Batshit crazy does not lead to constructive dinner table conversations.
