Very true. Their motivations were not as noble as modern interpretations
present it. There were many economic factors at play, of course.
Similar to how the confederate cause has been retroactively interpreted to be something nobler than it was. The difference being retaining the institution of chattel slavery as the foundation of the Souths social system was the top priority of the secessionist.
