I was referring to the people outraged by their removal who
sat we can't erase history while selectively ignoring parts of the ugly history. After all it's just stone and bronze, right?
Growing up in Virginia I honestly never really paid them any attention. I played the rebel side in or war games and even owned a confederate flag. Not out of hate but out of naïveté. But it's not the same for everyone. I never had to worry about lynching or church bombings or just general discrimination. These statues are representative of that as many of the people who erected them intended them to be. I can't really blame people who want them to come down and support them in their LEGAL efforts to do so.
We can't rewrite or replace our history. The memorial at Dachau stands in the middle of a bustling city as a reminder of Germany's past and as a wish never to repeat it. There is a place for these monuments to serve the same purpose. But let's not forget purpose for which they were created either. I believe there is a balance that can be reached. And again, growing up in va, I can say there currently is not this balance. [Post edited by Hoojack at 08/15/2017 09:55AM]
