Exactly.
The great American experiment was that there would be a written Constitution and that there would be elections by the governed. The southern states tried to subvert the republican form of government by trying to nullify an election by taking up arms. This is why the North rose up and supported war after Fort Sumter -- not slavery, per se. Stephen Douglas probably didn't care a whit about slavery, but he came out strongly on behalf of the sanctity of free elections. [Post edited by DanTheFan at 08/15/2017 10:18AM]
