I understand the concept of reducing a liability. I don't consider that a
"handout", particularly when the individual liability in taxes is so huge to begin with for people with high incomes.
When I see my net paycheck at 50% of gross earnings because I claim 0 exemptions, choose a single filing status, and then manually withhold extra dollars on top to ensure I don't underpay, and then still have to stroke quarterly estimated checks to avoid an underpayment..... sorry, I don't consider any reduction to that to be a "handout" to me. Yes, it's a reduction in tax liability (I have no problem calling it that), and yes, my overall situation is a good problem to have, but any reduction to my tax bill is most certainly not a "handout". I also don't think the gov't is "giving" me anything. They are simply taking less from me.
