I'm not terribly comfortable with the general thesis.

I think above all it reflects the myth that these are either/or, all/or nothing solutions. Most thoughtful people don't think that, and it is really just a political tool, used by those on extremes.

Additional and higher quality security is on the table regardless of what happens with current gun control efforts. That shouldn't be waiting in line for a result on the gun issue. We should end this nonsense talk about arming our school teachers. That is the most insane, political suggestion I have ever seen in my life. Talk about the (truthfully, still unconfirmed, but certainly highly possible) inadequate crisis response by Broward County, because that provides an instant scapegoat, and instead of thoughtful discussion about training and screening issues, the response is "let's arm the nation's educators", as if adequate training in crisis response - especially live fire crisis response - is no longer important.

Being pushed by a blowhard who happily declares his own hypothetical heroism from the safety of his White House podium. Think about a conversation in your real personal life where somebody with 0 combat training or experience talks up his own heroism under fire. Would you do anything but snicker at him? This is the guy who wants us to arm the nation's ed school graduates.

Personally, I think there are many good reasons to enhance gun control in this nation. Start from the top - we have an addiction to guns in our culture, which maybe we can begin to address. People want guns for protection, for hunting, for sport and hobby. Do we really need to make guns beyond a certain lethal force available to virtually everyone? There should be very reasonable discussions available to reasonable people on both sides. Somehow, this has become such a damn cultural issue that reason is left in the cold.

But why would I want to wait and see how that turns out before addressing security? Monitoring social media? Guards in schools - not opposed to that at all, but I wonder how we intend to pay for it if we we're hoping for high quality security. Of course a gun ban doesn't guarantee that a would be killer would never get a gun, so security issues are equally important regardless of the success of any gun control efforts.
