There's a pretty significant logical flaw in the section you quote
And it's here:
"There's always been that element, but for decades it was overlain by a class of DC conservatives who code switched, spoke the Very Serious language of ideas & policies. This is the conservatism that white moderate libs still imagine: an actual ideology, with arguments."
The dog whistle crew is a thing and always has been. Sure.
But actual philosophical conservatism is also a thing. Like any philosophy it lives in a utopia where a lot of the problems of actual humanity are just ignored. That doesn't mean that it's all bullshit. There is an actual ideology, with arguments. The rise of Donald Trump does not mean that George Will, for example, was just covering for the Deplorables all this time.
The David Dennison experience in the GOP hasn't so much shown the secret corruption inherent in Conservative Politics, so much as it's shown the tenuousness of the connection between Big Business Fiscal Conservatism and the hoi poli that were suckered into coming out and voting for it.
