If this were true, you would not have seen such a groundswell of opposition
among repubs and other conservatives to TrumpTariff. In fact they probably played very significantly into his walkback of the initial cross-the-board idiocy.
It also doesn't jibe with sharp opposition to Trump's candidacy by almost all conservatives. His initial support was grass roots and dismissed as absurd by almost all repubs. It was something Trump had to overcome, which it turns out, his talent for self promotion and reality star-feel for the media made easy for him given the rebellious mood of the public.
All of us - dems and repubs, and independents who were repulsed by the Don's candidacy, helped to create the circumstances where the guy who just gave a voice to their anger got their vote.
This opinion piece bothers me - it suggests that many, particularly on the dem side (where the end to the Don will probably have to come from if by 2020), still haven't figured out how they became the Don's greatest asset.
