Some truth to that, but the Don does his part to create the impression
that whiny white males feeling their privilege slipping away are his base, and thus the new "conservatives". Generalizing, he does this in two ways - first, much of his agenda is about bringing back the past. These tariffs are about bringing back the past. Keeping alive the coal culture of WV, PA, OH, etc is about bringing back the past. I saw an interview with a Trump voter from Eerie PA who summed it up - "I just want things to go back to the way they were".
And let's face it, if you are conjuring images of the 1950s or before, you are conjuring a country dominated by white men.
The other is more direct - calling non-white countries "shitholes" (even if you refuse to accept he said that exactly, he almost definitely said something to spark it). Retweeting messages from a known British hate group - on the presidential feed!?! His response to Charlottesville talking about all those fine people marching under swastikas and KKK banners.
The Don seeks out the culture wars like a security blanket when he feels threatened. Look at the way he went out and personally revived the NFL kneeling thing after losing his 2nd bid to kill Ocare, before the new tax law perhaps succeeded in doing that.
So it is not all that surprising that those not on the right would have this viewpoint, and Reagan didn't give them the same reasons to believe it of him.
