Patently absurd?
What does this email from James Comey mean?

There are multiple parts in the email where Comey makes it clear that his concern is how the intelligence community is viewed. He is worried that telling the public about the investigation at that time will open up claims that the intelligence community is not independent. Who would those claims be coming from? Answer: Republicans because they had already been making those claims since the summer. He is also worried that any such statement will make open up the FBI to attacks of launching an "October surprise" so they chose not to do so. Who would be the ones accusing the FBI of the October surprise? Republicans because they were already claiming that the elections would be rigged against Trump.
I don't think there is any doubt that this thought process impacted Comey. But you can disregard evidence and call it patently absurd if you want.
