I think it's patently absurd to suggest Comey, the FBI, as well as Clapper
and Brennan could so easily be manipulated to act a certain way simply because it "is a daily talking point on conservative media." I doubt they gave two chits about what talking heads were yapping about when it came to deciding what the proper thing to do was.
Comey has already said, long before this report, it was already a well known story about Russian meddling, they honestly thought Hillary would win, and they weren't going to play into Trump's narrative that "the election is rigged" by announcing so close to an election they were opening up an investigation. He wasn't about to risk tarnishing the FBI's reputation by letting conspiracy theorists claim they were trying to "tip the scales" in an election. He may have even worried it could only fire up the Trump base and tip it the other way unfairly.
IMO, he did the right thing there. Just as he did the right thing in July. And the right thing wrt to Weiner's laptop. He may have gotten his hand slapped for not properly following protocol in the latter two, but I honestly think he did what he thought, at the time and given circumstances handed to him, was best for the FBI and the country.
