When it comes to natural gas, Russia is (or is close to) Europe's biggest supplier, so that creates a codependency. Sure, Russia can cut off all supplies, as they've done to former Eastern Bloc countries like Ukraine, but they do have product to move. Cutting off Ukraine is one thing. Cutting off all of the EU might hurt Russia more than the EU. That nat gas does them no good sitting at the entrance to the pipeline. They need to sell it.
Not only do I not blame Germany for doing this, I think it is a good thing in the long run - countries that trade with each other tend not to go to war with each other.
Which could launch us into another discussion of the some of the post WWII international institutions that Trump wants to scuttle, but we can leave that to another day...
