I think we had a brief window at the start of that war to do something transformative, but it was never better than a long shot. And for much more than a decade this has been nothing but a quagmire in which we'd be waited out, whether it took 2 years or 50 years. And the pres who negotiates the exit will be subject to criticism, especially if the place descends into chaos, or reactionary rule, or whatever. Which is a strong possibility, I'm sure.

But we have to leave, because it'll be the same 10 years from now. Trump obviously wants to tout this in the election campaign, but that's a good thing about democracy - sometimes it does force elected officials to do the right thing, even when there's no perfect thing.
