The vaccine teaches your body to mount a strong immune response that kicks the virus’s ass if you are exposed to it. It is not some kind of electric fence that prevents you from being exposed. It’s more like a sophisticated burglar alarm system that has the cops at your door within a minute of a window being broken.

“Breakthrough infections” are when vaccinated people actually get sick and develop symptoms. Those have happened, but are much rarer than someone vaccinated getting exposed and testing positive for a few days. Professional athletes are tested several times a week so they will know even if the vaccine works exactly how it is supposed to.

I’d also note that vaccinated people can spread the virus, but their ability to do so wanes quickly as the immune system kills it off. The issue with Delta seems to be that it is much easier for vaccinated people to spread than other strains, at least for 3-4 days. So when you have a combo of vaxxed people who think they're bulletproof and unvaxxed idiots who think the whole thing is a hoax crowding into bars and restaurants, it spreads and the unvaxxed people get wrecked by it.
