That the vaccines aren’t what we thought they were. I think that’s another strawman. The closest equivalent is the flu vaccine, which was never a guarantor against infection (but reduces your chances of getting it) and makes the likely course of the disease less severe if you get it. And has always required seasonal boosters.

I believe they are as close to what we thought they were, if we were being realistic based on our knowledge of respiratory viruses, as we could have expected. The real threats are two-fold - (1) vaccine hesitancy, and (2) emergence of new variants that could potentially render vaccines useless one day, and basically be a brand new pandemic all over again.

We can’t eliminate the risk of (2). That is not new or unexpected information. But if we could eliminate (1), we could dramatically reduce the risks of (2).

And reduce the trend trajectory of infections and severe illness along the way.
