Free market requires access to information that a medical consumer doesn't

have. And choices, which may exist but aren't readily apparent. Even in non-emergent situations, like choosing a family physician, pricing isn't disclosed in any web page or referral page I've ever seen. Then most communities have very little choice when it comes to the question of to whom does one give one's hospital patronage, or it's decided by where your physician has admitting privileges, again not something readily apparent when you chose the physician in the first place, IF you chose the physician--more likely your family practice doc gave you a referral.

It just doesn't remotely approximate buying a car (say, childbirth, or maybe elective knee replacement? I don't know the prices of these things sufficiently to do a meaningful analogy) or a house (say, cancer treatment?), or a refrigerator (say, an ER visit for a strain/sprain?)
