Interesting stuff. There's so much in play with all of this.

Surprised about the discrepancy between Japanese women living in America and Japan, and wonder how the diet compares. Do they continue to eat "Japanese"?

Ethnic/genetic makeup surely plays a role- some groups are just more prone to obesity and diabetes given the US diet. Within Asians, there are differences with people of Japanese descent and Korean, let alone Pacific Islanders. Culturally, how different is the US diet really than other countries, and are they eating more like us in recent years? What about activity levels- walking and all that? We've got a more diverse population so that's going to make our results different than other comparables.

In our case, with the obesity issues which are heavily lifestyle related but compounded by genetics, income, mental health, we could probably move the needle a lot by just doing better with basic care for diabetes and similar common conditions that are relatively cheap/easy to treat. Given our overall expenditure, if politics weren't a factor, there has to be a way to get that basic stuff nailed without messing everybody else up too bad. Even if a lot of it is people failing to take care of themselves, we've got to deal with it.
