Some analysis on that

1) Some of the difference between the US and other countries is based on definitions for what constitutes a live birth. In the US, any live birth and subsequent death is counted in the infant mortality statistics. In other countries, there are minimum requirements (gestational age, weight, etc) in order for the birth to be counted as a live birth
2) The US has a higher percentage of pre-term births than European countries (a separate article provides a link between obesity and increasing preterm births in the US). This explains a good portion of the variance between our infant mortality rate and other european countries.

It's interesting that we compare favorably for pre-term births (up to 36 weeks), but our infant mortality is higher (although not substantially so) for full term births. It seems we perform much better with the difficult births, and not as well with straightforward ones.
