Regarding my points, I think it's more supply and demand. There is only real demand for stuff like kale and heirloom tomatoes among the yuppies and hipsters so that's where you can find it. Poorer folks just don't want it for some reason and I do think it's cultural. Recall some members of the community in DC opened an affordable farmers market in Anacostia and similar to what you described -- no real interest. It's sad and I agree eating better is a key to us being healthier....probably even moreso than access to healthcare at least for most people.
