If you really want to know why we are special

I can try to explain it.

In every other country that I can think of, the fundamental way of thinking is that the government is in charge, and any rights and privileges of the people are bestowed upon them by the government.

This country was setup so the People are in charge, and any power the government has is bestowed upon it by the People.

We are, at the absolute fundamental level, different from every other country. And in that regard, our Constitution is setup so that We The People don't ever, no matter how good the intentions are, hand any of our inalienable rights over to the government. The FF's wanted to make it impossible for this country to ever evolve into a tyranny (and if it did, we are expected to overthrow that government).

All that said, I do think there are things we should do to better regulate gun ownership (and I've posted them on the board a few days ago with generally positive responses from readers on both sides). But the outright disarming of the population is not a good idea, is not Constitutional, and is just as un-American as locking people up for speaking against the government.
