misleading and painting a false narrative News just doesn't have the same ring. Trump, and those that talk about "Fake News" were not talking about blatant lies or completely fake stories a la Dateline's SUV roll over story, Dan Rather's W deferment letter, Brian Williams taking gunfire, etc. They are talking about painting a false narrative to paint a picture that isn't accurate in order to lead the viewer to a false conclusion. One simple example we see all the time is when they cite gun deaths in the high 30K range when trying to push a pro-gun control narrative to combat gun violence. While never citing that 2/3's of those are suicide. It's not a fake statistic, but it's purposefully using a deceptive statistic in order to be intentionally deceptive (wrt gun violence) to paint a false narrative to lead the viewer to a faulty conclusion.

You're absolutely right about the purpose of the 1st amendment, and I believe it's one of the biggest things that makes this country so great. But that should be for the press to expose and correct false narratives, not push them for political purposes. There is nothing false about the narrative that these raids were going after folks that had already gone through the legal system and were issued deportation orders. But that's not the narrative the WaPo article was pushing at all. They were pushing as hard as they could to paint a different, and I would argue irrelevant narrative (just as it would be saying the same about Mr. Manson).
