some years back, which touches on this question. Essentially the "well regulated" language was there because the assumption all along was that arms would be controlled by the states, not the national government, and they would call up and train their own militias. Posner's theory was that a state law that banned individual ownership altogether but required every citizen of the state to have a registered rifle stored in a state facility would have been perfectly acceptable under the 2A, because the point had all of nothing to do with individual gun ownership. In fact, no one even seriously claimed it did until around the 1970s when the gun lobby took over the NRA and started promoting its individual right theories that finally was made law by an activist hack named Antonin Scalia.

But back to the original point, the FF's were concerned about the president becoming a tyrant and usurping military authority under a "king's army." Not so much home protection, etc. Not to say people didn't defend their farms with their muskets, but that was just a given (and there is really no reason that the same principle has to apply in a city as it does on the frontier). Again, city-wide gun bans was mainstream as hell even in the Old West. It wasn't until the last 40 years or so that we were even seriously talking about this.
