I think the only route for doing what we lefties want is to amend the constitution, a very unlikely proposition.

Legislating and hoping that the Supreme Court will uphold it, even if you could get past the filibuster, seems unlikely in my lifetime. (I'm 67, might have 20-25 years left based on general health and family history.) Certainly the current Supreme Court is even more averse to limiting the reach of Second Amendment protections under their so-called originalist theory than was the Court as it existed in the last major 2d Amendment case, District of Columbia v. Heller.

Anything likely to happen will be in the nature of incrementalist stuff--waiting period, background check for private sales, red-flag laws, etc. But we have red flag laws in Colorado, this was a gun store sale so the private sale loophole didn't come into play, there was a background check which his juvenile offense didn't trigger...none of this stuff would have made any difference.

This case might just be an example of the cost of having a 2d Amendment, but we're always going to have it--or at least we are for the foreseeable future.
