Oh that's not true. Libertarians get a bad name.
They are with the dems on things like abortion rights, gay marriage, and immigration. But they believe in free markets economically. The philosophy is rather consistent in its support for individual freedom with the cost being individual responsibility.
The problem is IMO that too many of them try to be purists in some kind of mid-1800s way, which drives observations like yours. If one ever got elected, like anyone else (including Trump) he or she would be pulled to the middle. But wouldn't you rather start from a libertarian place with a president than from a more authoritarian place, like with Trump?
