Now compare rates of obesity, smoking, alcohol abuse, drug addiction,
diabetes, and any number of other things that contribute to cost of healthcare. Further insulating consumers health choices from payment/financial penalty - more than they already are with their employer provided health insurance or medicare already covering the vast majority of expenses - is also going to lead to increased demand for care ... so you can't even compare current needs to future needs.
Medicare for all is a lofty goal that we can't afford and a majority of people don't even want. If we want a healthier country, why not go for lower hanging fruit that 1) we can afford 2) will make a difference and 3) can actually get passed.
Let's start with:
-School lunches
-Mandatory PE class
-Nutrition education
-Smoking/vaping/etc education
-Allowing people to buy catostrophic-only plans
-Investing in rural broadband that can bring telemedicine to underserved communities at lower cost
-Incentivizing grocery stores and health food stores to locate in food deserts (subsidies, loan guarantees, etc)
-Treating addiction instead of criminalizing it
-Taxing unhealthy foods/cigarettes/etc at a rate that accurately represents the resources they demand from the public
-etc, etc, etc
