The real answer? Deficits are neither good nor bad. What are you getting
for them? If we're spending a few trillion waging war and reconstruction in Iraq, that's not my preference. If we're spending a few trillion improving public infrastructure, this it's almost a no-brainer. Most importantly, if you run up deficits to help lessen the impacts of economic collapse, good deficit. If you run them up during an economic growth period when you should be collecting more revenue, bad deficit. We seem to run back and forth, rhetorically anyway, between wanting to expand government or wanting to shrink it until we can drown it in the bathtub, with the result being that we tend to run them no matter what.
