The FBI had an on ongoing investigation before Comey was fired.

They were looking into Russian subversion of our election and whether or not they were aided domestically. So yes, the impetus is and has ALWAYS been about an election, and the direct relationship of the integrity of our elections to our security. That this threat was posed by our traditional global enemy (Russia) makes it even more of a national security matter.

Now, getting to Trump. When he fired FBI Director Comey, for the "Russia thing", there is no question that that action shined a great big spotlight on him.

Lastly, everyone from the DOJ, who have spoken on camera on the matter of the investigation have spoken of it in terms of getting at the truth of the matter, not in terms of "getting" anyone. That of course is exactly what we want them to do, without fear or favor.
