The natural progression of things, and certainly not uniquely American. Mining towns, oil towns, railroad towns, dried up ports, you name it. Things change, people move.
Trying to roll the clock back to a time when one’s town’s economy was different is a fool’s errand and a really odd thing for millions of people to obsess over. And to your point, most young people who grow up in those towns (myself included) can’t wait to get the eff out. That isnt necessarily a bad thing and 1950’s Norman Rockwell America really just doesnt exist any more and never will again.
