I actually don’t think we disagree too much
I am on my phone and am going to be fairly busy the next couple of days so this response is going to be shorter than i would have liked.
I do think trade is a good thing and I am not advocating protectionism.
My statements in my earlier post about the geographic winners and losers was simplistic (this is a post on a forum rather than a book). I know that some people in Ohio are doing great (look at Columbus). My main point is that the pains of globalization are not distributed randomly or evenly. They are concentrated in certain geographical areas. Public policy has effectively transferred wealth out of these areas.
We need to make political choices that help alleviate these downsides. As you said, the current job retraining and wage assistance hasn’t worked. We can’t just ignore the losing areas as we have been doing.
In terms of overall winners and losers from trade, my comments that there are more losers than winners was more predictive then descriptive. And that has more to do with our political choices and economic consolidation than globalization in and of itself.
Sorry I can’t put more time into this
