The Brain Drain
It is a big problem here too. I was in a discussion recently about it. Someone said that in order to fight the decline we need to increase spending on education (which is funded by local taxes primarily), presumably to improve the quality of our workforce. Someone responded that when we spend more on education we're just spending our money to educate kids who will go live somewhere else. We're paying for the education of some other place's future citizens, she said. The argument wasn't meant to be a serious objection to education, but it was an interesting point nonetheless.
A friend of mine interviewed former Governor Baliles recently for a book he's working on. Baliles (a former southside boy) made a great point about local political and community leadership these days. When I was in school, Baliles said, the A students ended up running things eventually. Then the A students started moving away, and the B students became the ones running things. Then the B students started moving away too, leaving the C students to run things. Now, he said, it's the former D students who are in charge.
I've enjoyed this discussion. Reminds me of why I used to like hanging out here. Hope you're well amigo.
