A little too much. I can see how the disincentive might be more prevalent in the construction industry. At least from the few friends I have in the industry, the work is job by job. I have friends who have turned down jobs because they didn’t like something about it, like maybe the commute, just figuring they’ll wait for the next. In leaner times they will take anything.

A buddy who is a really talented carpenter went months, maybe well over a year, without work during the Great Recession. Things picked up and he had no trouble working constantly for about the last 8 or 9 years. So removing yourself from the workforce for an extended period probably doesn’t have the impact that it would for an accountant, who might be more inclined to feel a need to get back to work even for less money.
