Evangelical America wasn't a terribly organized political force until 50 or so years ago. Everything was very local. That changed in the 60s when things got ... interesting. The Cold War. The counter culture movement. The civil rights movement. All things that made social conservatives lose sleep at night, and all things where the Democrats embraced the scary position. So Falwell, et al decided that it was necessary for the religious right to become a more effective political force and lined up with the GOP.
